Students of Clarkdale Elementary were visited by an unexpected guest today when rap artist Chris “Ludacris” Bridges came to their school and presented each student with a brand new coat just in time for the holidays.

Bridges, founded the “The Ludacris Foundation” in order to give back to the community. His foundation partnered with Macy’s and the Cobb Schools Foundation to make this event possible. The Ludacris Foundation donated 500 coats to the students of Clarkdale and Austell elementary schools who were recently impacted by the floods.

On September 21, the 450 students at Clarkdale Elementary were evacuated due to the rising waters. Flood waters quickly consumed their school leaving nothing showing above the water but the roof and the American flag. Clarkdale students were unable to return to their school. Fortunately, the students and over 45 staff members are now calling neighboring Austell Intermediate and Compton Elementary home. Not only did these students lose their school, many families lost everything at their homes.

The students of Clarkdale, Compton and Austell Elementary schools were thrilled to get an unexpected visit by Ludacris. Greeted by screams of excitement, he assisted in distributing coats and greeted all the students. He told the students that “we all need to help those in need.” He encouraged the students to lend a helping hand and get good grades in school.

“This is a wonderful experience our kids will never forget,” stated Margie Bickerstaff, Clarkdale principal of 17 years. Bickerstaff has been working diligently with her staff to be sure all their student’s academic and emotional needs are met since being moved to their new locations.

You can still help. Donations can be made through the Cobb Schools Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting, rewarding and enhancing the schools, staff and students of Cobb County School District. Donate now on our online donation form.
